They may not be the healthiest of foods but crisps are still the second most popular snack in the UK, research shows. But with crisps made from other vegetables and even fruit now on the market, is the classic potato crisp under threat? Whether you like them salted, peppered, plain or hand-cooked, eating crisps is practically a British pastime. A third of children eat crisps daily, according to research by YouGov and 40% of UK adults eat crisps at lunchtime. Our taste for the salty treats does not appear to be waning either as our spend on crisps, nuts and snacks increased by 29% to £3.3 billion over 2007-12, reports market research firm Mintel. But the crisp market as we know it is changing, as consumers look to find healthier alternatives to fried potato snacks including popcorn and root vegetable snacks. Walkers is still one of the leading crisp brands in the UK and holds a 56% share of the potato snack and popcorn market. The amount of salt in Walkers brands has been cut by between 25% and 55% since 2005 says owner PepsiCo - equivalent to taking 2,400 tonnes of salt and 40,000 tonnes of saturated fat per...

#SeedPotato #Agriculture #MarketDynamics #CropProtection #YieldChallenges #PricingForecast #GrowerStrategies #MarketOutlook #Sustainability The forecasted price for seed potatoes in 2023 has surged to EUR 50.70 (USD 50.20) per 100 kilos, marking a remarkable 35% increase from the previous year. However, this spike in prices comes amidst significantly lower yields per hectare, attributed partly to adverse weather conditions and restrictions on crop protection products. As a result, growers face the daunting task of navigating a challenging sales season, with buyers showing a preference for smaller-sized potatoes, leading to discrepancies in pricing across size categories. Martin Jansen Klomp, Benelux regional manager, emphasizes the inherent risks and costs associated with seed potato cultivation. Despite the hurdles encountered during the previous season, there's a notable 13% increase in financial returns per hectare, instilling optimism for the upcoming season. Furthermore, a decline in the total area dedicated to seed potato cultivation in Northwestern Europe, coupled with a projected further decrease in 2024, hints at favorable sales prospects for Dutch growers in the coming year. The 2023 seed potato market presents a blend of challenges and opportunities for growers, characterized by soaring prices, yield constraints, and evolving buyer preferences. Despite the hurdles, optimism prevails, fueled by increased financial returns...

Spice Application Systems främsta elektrostatiska experter på Snackex

Spice Application Systems (SAS) will have two of the top experts in electrostatics on hand at this year’s Snackex exhibition to explain how the latest technology can save money, boost performance and improve product quality. Peter King and Alan Burgess from Spice Application Systems, a world leader in the use of electrostatics to apply flavours, oils and powders, will be at the show in Gothenburg from June 12-13. Installed on around 2,000 production lines worldwide, SAS’s electrostatic equipment is perfectly suited for a wide range of snacks, including the burgeoning pop chips market, as well as crisps, popcorn, nuts and baked pasta shapes. “Electrostatics lends itself perfectly to adding flavours, oils and powders to snack products, producing a much better all-round flavour with 100% coverage, and saving manufacturers large amounts of money by drastically reducing powder wastage,” said King. “Importantly, it also cuts the amount of dust in the air, which is much better for employees working on production lines and means much less downtime is needed for cleaning.” SAS estimates that food manufacturers can save up to 45% powder usage and achieve ROI within an average of three months, while also gaining greater control and accuracy of application. The...

Volunteer potato plants growing from seed infected with zebra chip are likely too few in number and survive too briefly to contribute to the spread of the crop disease, according to new Oregon State University research findings. OSU plant pathology laboratory manager Jordan Eggers, OSU Extension entomologist Silvia Rondon, Hermiston Agricultural Research and Extension station director Phill Hamm and OSU postdoctoral entomology scholar Alexzandra Murphy studied volunteers in fields hard hit by zebra chip in 2011. Eggers said they also planted infected tubers in a screened facility in 2011 to study emergence. He said 53 percent of infected seed produced plants, but only 10 percent of those sprouts showed any symptoms of zebra chip. Furthermore, only half of the symptomatic volunteer plants tested positive for the Liberibacter bacterium that causes zebra chip.
