Bortom förädling: Resursbesparande tekniker och biologiska insatsvaror i polsk potatisproduktion

Alongside breeding advances, Polish potato farming is increasingly embracing technologies aimed at saving resources and improving crop resilience. A notable example is the ploughless, or “no-plough,” cultivation approach developed and used by farmer Marcin Gryn from the Lublin Voivodeship, who designed a special deep loosener that places fertilisers such as potassium at depth without turning the soil over to the surface; compared with conventional ploughing, the yield difference reached 20 t/ha, with individual plots exceeding 100 t/ha. Precision agriculture is also gaining ground, particularly variable-rate application (VRA) based on soil scanning and fertility maps — in one study covering 77.12 ha, this approach saved almost 3 tonnes of ammophos and 3.8 tonnes of potassium salt compared with uniform application — as well as SatAgro maps and GPS guidance that steer machinery with centimetre-level accuracy.

A further trend is the growing use of biopreparations and biofertilisers. Surveys of Polish potato growers indicate rising interest in microbiological products and biostimulants, with farmers reporting improved plant condition, higher yields, and greater tolerance to stresses such as drought and waterlogging — benefits that matter greatly under a changing climate. Taken together, these developments show that Polish potato production is advancing on two fronts at once: better varieties and smarter, more sustainable management of soil, inputs, and biological potential.
